Shine Festival PDF Print E-mail

Shine, an annual festival held in Redcar, took place in Zetland Park on Sunday, attracting thousands of visitors who were entertained by gigantic art works, including papier mâché puppets made by Year 9 from Redcar Community College.

The day, which was full of exciting activities, included live music, face painting and a bouncy castle.

Brotton shop owners Marilyn and Fred Harding said the event was all about community spirit.
Marilyn said: “My daughter is one of the organisers. This event is free and it’s good for the community.”
Fred added: “There are a lot of activities so there should be something to suit everyone.”

Claire Swinburne 39, a mum-of four said her daughter Emily, 11, enjoyed the drumming.
“We enjoyed the singing from One Voice, a new group from Whale Hill,” she added.

Rachel George, 12, a Redcar Community College pupil, was looking forward to seeing her art work displayed.
“We’ve been doing some murals and art work to go up - another year made the puppets,” she said.

Head of art at the school, Alan Blackman, 37, said: “It’s a lovely event. We have enjoyed taking part.”
Mr Blackman’s children Eve (3), Faye (6), also enjoyed having their picture taken with mermaid Jessica Palfreyman, who attends events all over the North-east.
Asked how she became a mermaid, she said: “I suppose I just fell into it. The costumes are fabulous and I absolutely love meeting all the children at these events.”

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor Ray Goddard said the event had offered a great opportunity for local youngsters to showcase their skills in a wide range of arts and media.
