Maths Week 2010

June 21st-25th saw RCC’s first Maths Week. Students were treated to a week of fun maths activities designed to demonstrate to students the relevance of maths outside of the classroom.

Starting with year 9s on Monday 21st we had a ‘mathmagician’ visit school to demonstrate to staff and students how maths is used in performing magic tricks.

Maths Week 2010On Tuesday we took the whole of year 7 out to Stewarts Park to complete a maths trail around the park. This was a combined trip with PE (who also brought year 10 sports students). Fortunately there was brilliant weather and the overall level of success should also be put down to Year 7 students as a whole for their exemplary behavior in representing the school.

On Wednesday 23rd it was the turn of Year 8’s and some gifted and talented year 5 students from local primary schools. The activity was a mathematical games workshops ran by Paul Godding which developed students skills in problem solving, arithmetic and reasoning.

On Thursday we took year 10 students to Middlesbrough Football Club to take part in a financial awareness day. As well as learning about bank accounts, loans, mortgages, credit rating and other Maths Week 2010aspects of maths in the real world, students  took part in a Dragons Den type of activity where they worked in teams to produce and sell the best paper t-shirts. They also had a stadium tour and raced against each other to construct the largest possible tetrahedron from sticks and elastic bands.

Finally author Rob Eastaway and his musician colleague Richard Harris visited school on Friday and did two performances about the maths in music. The morning session saw year 7,8 and 9 students learning about rhythm, notes and coding through Maths Week 2010popular music. The afternoon session, attended by gifted and talented year 9 and 10 students from our partnership schools, introduced more complex mathematical concepts through the medium of music.

Throughout the week there were also lunchtime challenges put on in the dining hall and Mr Lipthorpe held a Krypton Factor challenge where students and staff could put their mental arithmetic skills to the test. Maths Week 2010
