On Wednesday 25th November Redcar Community College held its annual Celebration of Achievement Awards Evening. The students who graduated from the college in the summer of 2009 were invited, along with their parents, to receive recognition for gaining outstanding examination results; the best in the history of the college. As well as prizes for excellent academic results other awards included the Rotary Club Citizen of the Year Award, the School Citizen of the Year, the Croda Uniqema Science prize and the Redcar & Cleveland College Cup for outstanding examination results. Our guest of honour, and keynote speaker this year was the New Marske Harrier, Ricky Stevenson. Ricky is a middle distance ace who impressed at the European Under-23 Championship in July, coming fifth in Lithuania in the 1500m. He has since followed that up with a new 800m personal best of 1:49.09 minutes at the BMC Gold Standard Race at the start of August – firmly establishing himself in the Under-23 top ten in local disciplines. He is convinced that his major breakthrough will come in 2010 – either at the European Championships or the Commonwealth Games. At the conclusion of the evening Ricky delivered an inspiring speech to the students and guests before joining them for a buffet and photo opportunity. |
