A place to succeed

IMG_0287 Success can take many forms and our students succeed in so many ways!  From the academically able child who achieves A* grades to the child whose greatest achievement will be to overcome adversity and gain a new self-confidence.

We believe that “success is an attitude”.  Gifted and talented students are challenged and thrive; students with barriers to their learning are cared for by dedicated staff.

Raising aspirations

Our school culture is deliberately warm and welcoming; we place a high value on the importance of our relationships with the students.  We do this because we believe that young people need a secure attachment to school if they are to flourish and embrace the opportunities open to them through education.  We are dedicated to raising the aspirations of every child that comes through our doors, this is why there is a senior member of staff “on the door”, each day, to meet and greet every child.  Raising aspirations is a key feature of our key stage 3 (years 7, 8 & 9) pastoral curriculum.

At Redcar Community College we are proud of the outstanding work we do to include every child.  Exclusion rates are very low and yet behaviour is consistently good.  We achieve this in part, through our Behaviour for Teaching and Learning policy and through developing a school culture and ethos that values every individual.  Beyond this we have a well developed inclusion policy and a dedicated team who monitor attitude, behaviour and attendance and intervene quickly to remedy any concerns.  This intervention may take many forms and is deliberately personalised to the child’s particular circumstances, we do not operate a simplistic “one size fits all” approach.  In this way students experiencing barriers to their learning may receive specific help with a learning difficulty or need an adult to relate to or perhaps need the support of “Sid’s Place”.

Sid’s Place

Sid’s Place has deservedly gained a wide recognition for the quality of the support it offers to students.  It is a school within the school which provides a different and therapeutic environment for children having difficulty coping with the demands of the main school.  Sid’s Place may provide full time support for a variable period or some support balanced with a modified timetable whilst a child gains security.  The staff within Sid’s Place may also organise placements for some students with third parties who can offer appropriate and high quality training.  The culture in Sid’s Place is focussed on supporting the individual child in becoming “fit to learn”.

“Sid’s is more like a family than a school.”

“The support we get from the teachers is unreal.”
