A place to learn
We believe that every child has a right to feel safe and cared for at school. That every child has a right to learn from excellent staff, who are committed to the children’s development and well being. These beliefs are at the heart of our Moral Purpose.
For these reasons we all follow a clear and fair “Behaviour for Teaching and Learning” code; the children value this code because they understand it and they helped to develop it. To make sure that the children always receive the highest standards of teaching possible, we are committed to the continuous training of staff. All children and staff belong to one of four Houses and this helps us create a caring family feel to the school. Each morning the children register in tutor groups which are of mixed age and it has become common place for older students to care for their younger peers.
Our curriculum offer is outstanding and is refined each year to deliver choice and appropriate qualifications through a pathways model. We place equal importance on the development of broader skills and the children’s well-being and to ensure this we provide a wide range of alternative and extra-curricular opportunities.

Our beliefs and values
At Redcar Community College we are guided by a “Moral Purpose”, it is a simple statement of our beliefs and it is important to us because it keeps us on the right track when we make decisions about the students and about the school.
We believe that our students deserve the best and that our job is to make sure they receive it. We believe that to serve our community we must develop self-belief, self-confidence and high aspirations in all of our students. We also believe that we must be a centre for learning for the whole community and that is why we work closely with families and have become a Full Service Extended School.
The House system
Students and staff are attached to one of four houses each named after one of Captain Cook’s ships; Adventure, Discovery, Endeavour and Resolution. This structure helps us to create the friendly and caring family atmosphere that visitors often comment on and it also provides natural teams for competition something we actively encourage.
Behaviour for Teaching and Learning; our “BTL”
This is a simple and effective system which all staff and students understand and use. It is based on two simple ideas, firstly that every student has a right to learn without distraction and secondly that rewards should outweigh consequences. In every lesson students can gain achievement points for their work or contributions, these are all logged electronically and lead to rewards.
“This school has given me a lot of support to improve my behaviour, in and out of school.”
