Primary Transition
Redcar Community College is very proud of its transition programme and before your child starts school they will have been on several visits and will know some of their teachers well.
A member of staff with specific responsibility for the induction process, makes regular visits to the Primary Schools from which our children come, and makes every effort to get to know the children. If your child has Special Educational Needs, the SEN Coordinator will have visited the Primary Schools to become aware of any difficulties, and to make plans to address their needs. Students will meet up with a ‘buddy’, an older student who helps them through their move to secondary school, and will be able to support them on their visits and help them in their first few weeks at school.
An Open Evening in June gives parents the opportunity to meet their child’s Pastoral Manager, Head of House and other staff who will support them through their school life.
School Lunches
Taylor Shaw, our catering provider, serves healthy meals including salads and sandwiches, as well as a wide choice of meat and vegetables in our ‘Choices’ dining area which was re-designed. Healthy eating is an important part of our Personal Education Programme. Students are provided with a swipe cash card and are able to add money to their card each day. Parents may, if they wish, forward a cheque weekly to our catering company who will add this sum to the student’s card. All students stay for lunch, or bring packed lunches to eat in school. NO STUDENT IS ALLOWED OFF THE PREMISES AT LUNCHTIME – THIS ENSURES THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD.

Clubs & Activities
The school prides itself on the large variety of extra curricular activities that it can offer students. Children attending the school are encouraged to participate in the wide range of clubs and activities that take place during the lunch break and after school.
A number of clubs including Maths, Science, Music, Drama, Table Tennis, War-gaming, Badminton, Chess, Five-a-side Football, “Can U Sing It”, Guitar, Keyboard and a variety of others are available to students after school. This compliments the extensive number of sporting teams and leagues that the school is involved in such as Soccer, Rugby, Netball, Basketball and Cross country running. A full range of lunch time activities are available.
We also offer a range of adventure activities involving outdoor pursuits in Scotland, The Lake District and the North Yorkshire Moors. Many students in Years 9, 10 and 11 follow the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme where they are encouraged to work towards the Bronze and Silver Awards by developing their personal skills in expedition work, practical services, improving their personal physical skills and by studying one of hundreds of hobbies in depth over a period of six months. We also have our own school Cadet
Force from Year 8 onwards.
Uniform
Our school uniform was designed by students, it is modern and not too expensive to buy. We expect students to come to school smart and clean. Parents are requested to ensure that students come to school in sensible black shoes and with a sensible black coat (that may include a waterproof hood). We do not allow casual hooded tops. Viewing evenings are arranged in June and our uniform can be purchased from school or direct from Ross’s of Borough Road, Middlesbrough, who are our official outfitters.
School staff run a uniform swap-shop where parents may purchase, for a small charge, items of used uniform in good condition. The charge made covers the cost of laundering.
