Special Educational Needs

Does your child have a Special Educational Need? If the answer is YES then we can help. Our Special Educational Needs procedures aim to:

  • Encourage feelings of worth;
  • Make the best of learning opportunities;
  • Encourage students to make the best of their abilities;
  • Promote equal opportunities for all students to access all our school can offer, regardless of race, gender, ability or social and economic background.

At Redcar Community College there is a specialist team, whose role is to support children with Special Educational Needs. This means that we provide expert help and support to those with Specific Learning Difficulties, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Physical disabilities and lower ability students. This enables all Special Needs Students to access the curriculum to the best of their ability.  This support includes:-

  • In-class support. Helping the student to access the curriculum. This can be by writing information from the board, helping with reading and writing or assisting with practical tasks.
  • Withdrawing small groups. The teacher provides the work and the students work with a Teaching Assistant in the SEN department. This often helps students who need to concentrate in a quiet atmosphere.
  • Exam Concessions. All students are tested on entry to Redcar Community College. They are monitored throughout their time here. If a student has a particular difficulty, they will be assessed by the Learning Support Service. This provides the SEN Team with information about who needs a scribe, reader or extra time for exams. Arrangements are then made for the student to be withdrawn, with other similar ability students, to sit their exams in a separate room.
  • Student Profiles. In particular those students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Staff are provided with details on strategies to help students within class and around the school.

SEN staff withdraw students to work on Literacy and Numeracy skills.  This is ongoing throughout the year for KS3, but there is an intensive week for Y9, before their SATs in May. Students are guided through previous exam papers and are given advice on how to achieve their potential.
