Primary University
This guide has been written as an introduction to our successful Primary University project and it aims to answer many, and maybe even all, of the questions young people, parents, members of the wider community and others may have about the setting up or participating in the Primary University project at Redcar Community School.
The Primary University was established in November 2004 as part of the school’s Full Service Extended Programme. One hundred and thirty children over the past five years have graduated from the Saturday school. Supported by Teesside University and local primary schools.
So what is the Primary University?
The Primary University is an exciting development at Redcar Community College to give talented primary pupils in Year 6 the opportunity to take part in challenging, stimulating and fun educational activities.
What the Primary University aims to do
We want to give talented children the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in maths, arts, languages and science in fun and very exciting ways.
How does the Primary University work?
Talented Year 6 children from seven feeder primary schools – Coatham, Dormanstown, Greengates, Lakes, Newcomen, Riverdale and Zetland – are nominated for the Primary University by their school. Sessions are held in the COMPASS Centre, the base for extended services and activities at Redcar Community College, on Saturday mornings. There are modules of activities consisting of ‘movie make video’ creating/editing software, including animation, problem solving, rockets, and robotics. Sessions have been led by two of our secondary school teachers, and supported by students from Teesside University, together with a member of the support staff.
