Caring for your child

At Redcar Community College we believe that high quality Pastoral care for all of our students is part of our core purpose.  By working in partnership with you, their parents, we can secure their well-being, personal development and academic achievement.

Organisation

You child will belong to a tutor group organised on a vertical model with a small number of students from all five-year groups in the same form group.  This is a real strength of our school providing a family unit with older ones giving support, advice and care to younger ones.  All students are encouraged to be responsible and sensitive towards each other.

Every student is a member of one of four Houses in which the tutor group is based and these are named after Captain Cook’s ships but also represent 4 characteristics which we try to develop in our students. Younger siblings join the same House as older brothers and sisters.

  • Adventure – Green
  • Discovery – Red
  • Endeavour – Yellow
  • Resolution – Blue

We expect all students and staff to treat each other with respect.  We do not accept bullying or racist abuse in any form.  We have a clear anti-bullying policy, displayed in every classroom.

If you suspect your child is being bullied let us know – contact Pastoral Year Managers – and we will do our best to solve the problem.

Supporting Learning

We aim to provide a calm purposeful working environment to allow effective teaching and learning to take place.  Students and teachers have agreed to a clear and consistent policy of classroom expectations to allow this to happen.  This is our BTL Policy (Policy for Teaching & Learning).

  • This is displayed in every classroom.
  • Students are given two opportunities to settle down to their learning.
  • Consequences – 30 minutes Detention – are applied on the third warning.
  • If serious disruption to the learning of other students continues then he/she will be removed from the classroom to Remove and parents will be informed by letter.  The class Detention will remain.

Copies of the BTL Policy will be given out at the start of each school year and are also available from the downloads section of the website.

Celebrating Achievement

We all thrive on recognition and praise and celebrating our students’ work and achievement is a huge part of our school culture.

  • When you visit Redcar Community College you will see displays of work – Subject Star Boards, School Stars and Honour Boards, Sporting teams and achievement, Head Teachers Awards and House and Attendance achievements.
  • In the classroom students earn House points for good work and Good News for Parents to bring home.
  • Subject Certificates and Head Teachers Awards are given.
  • For quality work and real effort
  • You may receive telephone calls home, Praise Postcards or letters celebrating your child’s achievement
  • School trips are reward for good/improved attendance and Attitude to learning.

In short, we want to catch your child being good, succeeding at what they do, say ‘well done’ and share their success with you.
